If you're talking about the Captcha graphic that you have to enter, the answer is yes, it's cut the spam posts getting through by a large amount. I just looked at the spam log. How much of a problem do you think it is? Try huge. Since we bought the new server and software online on May 19th, we've logged 10,951 spam attempts, nearly 500 per day. A large percentage of these are automated bots that are now blocked completely.
We had seriously considered requiring registration to deal with the problem. It was not uncommon for us to wake up in the morning and find that some spammer had posted 100 or more times to all the forums. It was a major pain and sometimes took hours, to find all the spam posts and delete them.
If you don't want to register, that's fine. However, unregistered users or users that aren't logged in or post without supplying a password, will be required to confirm that they are a 'Carbon-based life form' by entering the Captcha code to post.
