Hard disks are sooo cheap now that it's hard to resist wasting all that real estate. That said, I've started upsampling some of my more demanding cd's to 24/96 uncompressed wavefiles. It sounds a little bit better but since I use an editing software for that, I have control over the dithering applied. It's kind of fun and you can mess with the nasty sound on some of your favorite cd's or get it to "work" a little better with the tubes/cables=system synergy . I'm not much about convenience and more about the best sound posable. So, I just use an audio interface>outboard dac. The SB is pretty cool I have to admit.
Aside from the PC audio forum, theres a good primer on computer audio here;
