Buffing up

PJ spent his morning coffee time polishing up a design for the Buff today. Looks like it will fit on a very slightly modified Seduction chassis. This is a good thing, it means that we should be able to put the kit together pretty quickly from our existing parts inventory.

It will use a pair of 12AU7s. One half of each will be used as a cathode follower buffer stage and the other half will be used as a shunt regulator. So each channel will have it's own individual regulator.

This ought to be a nice device to attach directly to the output of the DAC chip in your CD player, or maybe after your Seduction if you need to drive a long cable, or as a buffer for any higher output impedance stage that you want to run into your low impedance passive preamp.

We'll get a protoype up and running soon. Meantime why don't you guys start poking around in your CD players and finding out how connect the output of the DAC chip directly to the output RCA's, bypassing the stock output stage op amps? The community could compile a list of instructions for hacking into various popular players, that we could list on the community page. I know there is another manufacturer who suggests just connecting a tube buffer to the stock output of a CD player. My experience indicates that connecting the Buff right at the output of the DAC chip is very much worth the additional effort.
