the exact dimension at the end of the horn- contour is not very important, if there are three or four small "legs" doesn`t touch the behaviour of the horn regarding that it is a floor firing horn- design. Imagine that the distance to the backwall and the dimensions of the listeningroom take the greatest influence on the bass- response. Dragonfly uses the dimension of the floor to support the opening of the horn- mouth, it is not a "classical" horn- design. Floor- firing horns have the ability to compensate some influences of the listeningroom, when the placement is near the backwall the virtual mouth (floor) is smaller and the spl- rising effect (muddy sound) of the backwall is minimized. Contrary the free placement results a bigger mouth- opening, the common thin bass- response of conventional speaker- designs at this position is also compensated in a wide range. Dragonfly need a placement which allows to "load" the room, when the horn is coupled to the room the bass- response is much more dynamic and deeper than you expect, when you don`t place them at the right position in your room the sound is thin and there are no deep basses at all. Dragonfly can sound fine in nearly every room, doesnīt matter if it is small or big, this is the reason why i give the design away for diy although it is not active. So donīt fear a FEW cmē`s more or less in the horn- opening, go and built the cabinets in your design and when you are not shure what to do you are welcome everytime to ask for support!
General behaviour of the mouth- opening:
When the opening is bigger you get more bass but also the mids coming out of the horn, when you have a smaller opening you have less bass- spl.
