I replaced the rectifier bridges with four schottkys in all of my kits. A layout information can be found here:

One has to be very careful to make sure that +/- outputs are correct and legs of the diodes are properly insultated to avoid any possibility of shorts. Can be dangerous and damage your equiptment if it were done incorrectly. I do not recommended this for a beginner.
