Why not just use a good passive or TVC passive? Or use a tube or SS buffer? No gain on either types. Here is a link to one:

I have personally heard this one and can verify it is a good one. Some like the Nelson Pas buffer but that is a FET buffer. Also a good sounding preamp/buffer but it is solid state.
Very simple solution. Another idea is to build just a switching box and still use the volume pot on the amp. I also think you can buy one cheap. As a matter of fact I have one you can have for about $50 plus the shipping.
