High pitch squeal on my Kit 2

I have a kit 2 that I am putting back together after converting it to 300b. I have wired it up but am now getting this high pitch squeal out of it when I increase the voltage on my variac. The tone changes with the volume control and if I position the volume control just right, it almost disappears until I move the dial above or below that point. It sounds like I am dialing in an old radio. I removed the feedback wires, thinking that may have been the problem but no help. I did notice when the wires were removed the plate voltage dropped on the 6550s from almost 500vdc to 450vdc, if that says anything.
Anyone have an ideas.
