You can veneer your current speakers fairly easily if you wish. No special skills are needed. You can purchase iron on veneer which only requires a regular iron to apply and a sharp blade to trim. You would just have to sand the current surface to get rid of any sheen so the adhesive can get a "bite". A link to a vendor that sells the veneer is attached. Just type in veneer into the search.
If your current speakers have chips on the vinyl you can fill those gaps with bondo, or any other adhesive (preferably 5 minute epoxy) mixed with filler such as wood dust.
Wipe on polyurethane is a good DIY finish that gives excellent results after 3 coats. Dry the rags flat though to avoid a fire.
