The picture on Brian's website that says 'inside of DAC kit 1.1' is my original DAC that I built when Brian took over the business. I was amazed to hear how my CDs came alive. Since then I installed regular black gates in the digital board, and boy the sound opened up further. Since then I built DAC Kit 2.1 signature, and just after a year of use with the N black gates the DAC 2.1 out beats 1.1. But wait till you further upgrade 2.1 with O/Ts, then you hear a big difference. I hear DAC Kit 1.1 is going through some good changes with ease of upgrading, so I definitely start with 1.1 and gradually upgrade to 2.1. You will also enjoy each quality of sound after each upgrades.
