i wondered about this as well
thinking out loud
if you only have equipment conected to one or the other i think the only effect would be to have longer lengths of wire to pick up noise
if you had equipment connected to xlr and rca at the same time you would loose the benefit of the balanced circuit as one of the xlr signal signal wires would loose be earthed at the rca socket
