Good day to you all.
I'm hoping someone could try this simple tweak to help me establish if the (great) results I'm experiencing is limited to my system or not. I apologise if the post is a bit long.
This is as simple as it gets when it comes to tweaking, and does not involve any soldiering or disabeling of any kind.
It refers to the attatching of speakers to their stands. The conventional way is to use blue-tac, a very established and prooven method. However, about a year ago I experimentet with pieces of bitumen (asfalt), and to my great surprise I found very good results when placing them under the rear corners - not the front side ones. I still used blue-tac under the front-side corners... I know some like to use small spikes between the front corners and the stand. I did not find the same positive effect when putting bitumen under the front side. Bitumen is a harder and not as forgiving a material as blue-tac, and hold the speaker down even firmer.
The sound became much more dynamic, harmonic and clean, but eventually I had to remove the bitumen as it gradually was manipulated out of its original form due to vibration and weight. After this I kept wanting to turn up the volume, as I felt the speakers had lost some emotional aspect in the vocals, an intimate quality, so to speak... But it never came back.
Then, the other day this previous experiment came back to me, and I remembered that my stands have two mounting holes at the rear end, near the corners. I then simply installed bolts from the bottom side, and secured them when they seemed to have the correct push opward to the speakers. I still use blue-tac at the front side.
Again: Success. I have done a lot of tweaking with caps (pio, BG) cabling, and what have you, but this is the best one yet.
I can't fully reccomend it until it is determined if this applies to all an-e speakers, and I'm hoping someone is willing to try this tweak.
So, what is the explanation for the effect? Well, maybe it mends some mismatch in my system (not complete AN), my home made speaker stands (solid-sand filled-35kg-spikes), or my listening room. If not I suppose that the harmonic vibration, which is one of the key aspects of this speaker, simply works better with a solid rear connection.
Well, enough said, this could very well not work on someone elses system...
Thank you for reading.
Kenneth.
