Re: Here's to Audio Note Kits

Hi Geraldo,

The preamp is probably the most ambitious of the kits, but it's well within the abilities of a careful builder. It requires that you take your time and pay attention, but it doesn't require any special skills. If you can solder, you can assemble the kit. If you can't solder, or don't know the proper technique, it's very easy to learn. I guess I'm saying any competent person could built the preamp!

I've actually built a few preamps (for me and friends who don't build kits) and I'd guess the first one took me about 30 hours and the last 20 or so. I only ever ended up making one mistake - failing to ground a film cap. That just added hum to the system but Brian quickly figured out the problem and I fixed it.

As for what it compares to commercially, it's hard to say. It has the phono stage from the Audio Note M7 preamp, the line out stage is from, I think, the M3 preamp and the power supply from the M2. If it were a commercial product, I suppose the Preamp PQ would probably sell for at least $5000 - maybe more since it's all large gauge silver point to point wiring in the signal path (that's the part where you have to pay attention!). Of course that's the 'base' version. You can jazz it up with silver input/output cable, BlackGate caps, copper or silver in oil Audio Note caps, NOS tubes, etc. Then the sky is the limit.

Whatever it compares to, the PQ is the result of Brian's direct collaboration with the Audio Note team in the UK. It's amazing how involved and keen they seem to get AN products into the hands of enthusiasts. It looks to me like they're not at all shy about permitting high end circuitry into kits.
