Very interesting to hear that increasing the density of the fill for the stands improves the sound quality.
I would be a bit worried about mixing lead shot with sand however. Chances are that, when your stands are turfed out sooner or later, the lead is going to end up in the environment, or worse, in some kid's sandbox; unlikely anyone is going to separated it out. A minor point on the scale of things I'm sure.

One alternative is to use pure lead shot and include a note to its potential hazard to the environment.

Better still, is to use pure black sand ( heavy minerals ). The specific gravity may well be similar to a lead shot-quartz sand mixture. I use a garnet-ilmenite-sphene mix panned from stream sediment for the bottom of my speakers. About 2 hours work for 20 kg of 4.5 s.g. sand. Quartz sand would be about 2.6 s.g.
