Too little gain is the dynamics killer, the Kit One has a pre-driver, read pre-amp stage, the 6SN7TJ Mesh is designed for lower power

Go ahead and try your TJ's, EH's and EML's, but not the XBLS and don't bother with a pre-amp. I've said it before, why would you want 2 carbon pots in the way of the music.
