I wouldn't worry about the age per se. These amps are not technological marvels in that they're not stuffed to the gills with tempermental chips etc. Here you're looking at good old fashioned minimalist architecture and crazy things like wire and capacitors and resistors! It's fair to say these things work or they don't.Did the seller use it a lot, and recently? Are you technically adept? If it's been sitting for years with no power, you may want to have a technician look it over. At the very least remove the base plate and look to see if all looks OK - no scortch marks, no leaking capacitors or spots below them with dried residue from an old leak. Make sure all the wire connections look OK and are solid.
Just to be safe, you may wish to power on your new Kit 1 at a safe distance from other gear and flamables. Having a fire extinguisher at hand might be wise as well. This will in all liklihood be overkill, but better safe... Once you've had it running successfully for 30 minutes or so, power off and attach a source and speakers and start from "0" on the volume and see what you've got.
The major changes to the Kit 1 have been the new chassis - and the upgrade editions. As far as I know, that's about it, so as far as sound goes you are not really out of date. Of course you may have old tubes that need replacing, etc., but the fundementals should be there.
I recommend you fall in love with the sound, get the new, big chassis from Audio Note Kits, order some upgrades and then join the rest of us in the Audio wing of the poorhouse!
Let us know how it works out, and welcome to Audio Note Kits!
