kit1:5687 Tung-Sol
6sn7 RCA 5692 red base
5U4(?) Westinghouse
300B Western ElectricI've played with all of these, and each makes a difference. The rectifier is surprisingly important and if my amp hadn't eaten my Sylvania from 1942, I'd still swear by it. By chance, I found the Westinghouse and it may even be better, also from 1940s I think. The EH rectifier is more etched than the Sovtek which is good but not as deep staging and layering. The Tung-Sol 5687 is well balanced, but I haven't tried the 6 or so other pairs I have on hand. The 5692 is superior to all others I tried in terms of clarity and focus (others incl: smoked glass and clear Raytheon, Mullard, etc.--I have 8 coming I just got in auction so I'll report soon!). The WE 300B are basically astonishing. The stock Chinese are creamy and warm while the WE are more incisive without any siblance or edge and have much better extension at both ends--although in the bass less improvement than highs, all while the most 3d midrange with an obvious focus on vocalists.
Dac 2.1xSig
Tried bendix 6x5 and thought the stock better but didn't give chance to burn in as was too busy rolling in the amp!
Tried Mullard Goldpin 6922 and thought JAN Phillips better as Mullard was bass heavy and offered great weight to vocals but at cost of clarity in highs. It's all about system matching, and when I get my new Balanced AN pre (can't wait!) I will have even more to play with!
Enjoy.
