The resistor would only increase the output impedance of the amp which would make it interact with a speaker like a low damping factor amp like a tube amp. But Carver made his amp sound just like the reference amp. And I confirmed the Stereophile article directly with Gordon Holt. So I suspect there was more than just a resistor added.
But Carver does add a series resistor option in some of his amps . The current outputs on the Sunfire a good example.
