Curious what power and speakers you were using? I found my Marantz better sounding than the Onkyo it replaced. I'm using the receiver to drive Revel in-wall. The Marantz had a much more natural sounding presentation.
I'm surprised you'd try Sony looking for less fatigue, if you are referring to fatigue as brightness. Marantz or possibly Yamaha would be my recommendations for less fatigue for current production receivers.
Let me know how it works out.
I have noticed with the "dynamic volume" on that the internal amp can't handle the bass on Blu-ray with heavy bass cotnet, but when listening at higher volume that should be turned off anyway. I leave mine off.
I just wonder if a setting or something may have caused the issue for you.
