what would cause vocals to be fuzzy/muffled?

I changed some speakers (swapped in some older Boston Acoustics floor speakers as my surrounds and switched to a new Denon AVR-2105 receiver. Lead vocals now sound muffled and/or fuzzy. I used the built-in auto-setup and although it is worse with DSP modes, I hear the problem in both stereo and Dolby IIx. It does not seem to be related to a given speaker. Could this be a power issue? Any recommendations as to how to diagnose and fix this? Overall the sound is clear and detailed but this is a fatal flaw! It is a small room, approx 12 X 12 with my solid JBL L5s as Fronts. I've got banana plugs on everything so its pretty easy to swap in other spare receivers I have.
