New Pre & Amp

Hello everyone looking for some help from people much more in the know than i am.
My Marantz 9200 from 2002 seems to be dying (either loose connection in preamp to amp connections or amps are dying) , its driving my main room.
I am looking at going the separates route this time but have limited funds. I spent around 3k for the 9200 and really like the "warm" sound it prodcues through my Mission 780's
My question (please dont be insulted by my naive question) is since i like the sound of the Marantz should i stcik with a Marantz preamp + any amp combo? Basically does the preamp mainly affect the tonality or the amp or is it really a function of both combined?
