You are obviously unfamiliar with the oppo unit in question. One of its claims to fame is the digital domain attenuators it implements.
Apparently it's house sound is not everyone's cup of tea, but I enjoy mine immensely. I run the balanced outs directly to my amp. For audio I run it as a 2.1 system; I don't hear an etched character to the sound, so perhaps I have found the right synergy (or I am deaf , your choice....
