For $599.00 look at the Cambridge Audio SR20, 2.1 but everything else and sound quality would be better than an AVR, IMO.
Also, FWIW, I had an Onkyo AVR that I replaced with a Marantz, the Marantz was so much better, I was really surprised as I thought most AVR's sound is pretty much in the same ball park.
The NAD products, which there are amny, is also a good suggestion.
