I forgot to mention that the amplifier runs hot. Over a long listening session in the summer, the AX-5 can really warm up my 13x16x8' room. The Twenty version is claimed to run cooler, but it will still be more like a tube amp than a typical class A/B solid state amp in this regard. So tube amp lovers who are looking for a cool running "summer" amp should look elsewhere.
Last, one other characteristic of the AX-5 is that it presents the soundstage a little further back and deeper than other amps. In my system, a vocalist located front and center in the mix will be presented a foot or two behind the plane of the speakers. In the same system, most other amps I've tried will place the same vocalist in the plane of the speakers. I actually prefer the presentation of the Ayre most of the time. It's not as intimate, but it's more like a live performance.
