Volume vs Gain

Okay, I've been wanting to ask this for a long time but haven't because I didn't want to appear stupid, which now may be moot after re-reading some of my own posts. Here we go: can someone explain to me (simply if possible) the diff. between volume & gain. I guess more specifically the gain. I'm pretty sure I've got the volume down, I think. Go clockwise - louder. See, I've already answered part of it. Now the gain thing..... thanks in advance, and don't be ugly to me - I'm old. Dave
