That is not actually true...any of those higher than 7th are just as bad or worse and have no place in music. They tend to lend a metallic edge to the sound and they also have the effect of making high frequencies sound CLOSER (ear/brain connects loudness of highs with distance), which has the knock on effect of damaging soundstaging information by making things seem closer than they should be. Flattened (to varying degrees) soundstage ensues...

I recommend you download Keith Howard's software (if it is still on the web) and perform his signal processing on a track you know well to see the effects on gets from adding distortion of different types. I did this and it was pretty enlightening. Another thing I did was to process the same track using the harmonics generated from different amplifiers based on measurements in Stereophile and Soundstage. That was VERY enlightening.
