I have owned that amp before and now currently own it's little
brother the XPA-200. I have found the Emotiva XPA amps to be very
neutral and revealing. If you have a mediocre preamp or a set
of bright sounding tweeters in your speakers, you will know it
with one of the XPA amplifiers.
As the others said, spend your money on a better preamp. I would
suggest a better solid state preamp such as a used Classe preamp.
A more smooth and natural sounding preamp will sound great with
that amp.
