When you say "vintage" receivers, do you mean 1960s and 70s? There was a lot of discovery going on in the mid-70s which didn't trickle down to most consumer oriented products until the late 70s, and not even then in many cases. Take crossover notch distortion for example, and copious amounts of negative feedback, etc. There were lots of products in the late 70s where these things continued to be ignored. For example, Pioneer receivers, Sony receivers. What awful sounding crap (comparatively speaking, for hifi). Remember how most stereo amps didn't sound good until they were pushed well beyond the first 1/2 watt?
So it should come as no surprise that many newer products sound better than most vintage products.
