Blackdog, swapped the small tubes as recommended. I think the right channel tube may have come loose, because, after swapping and ensuring that both the tubes were fitting snug in the sockets, the problem went away and the balance was back to normal. Strange that the volume should drop because of a loose fitting tube and not die altogether, but there doesn't seem to be any other explanation.

AbeCollins, Kootenay, don't have a multimeter lying around but shall go down to Ace this weekend and pick up one just to confirm that the biasing is fine.
