I asked Roger Sanders in an email if the Magtech amp would benefit from a preamp that provides a small amount of gain. Basically he said most amplifiers need a preamp to deliver a small amount of gain to reach their full output. But if the source has excess gain, like many do today, then you won't need any gain in the preamp.
So if your source/preamp combination is able to play your speakers as loudly as you desire, then the preamp has sufficient gain. That is my situation so from a gain perspective I don't need a preamp with gain.
I'd like to know what tube preamps anyone is using with the Magtech.
The Placette like I said is wonderfully transparent and effortless sounding, but I'd like to try a tube preamp for warmth, realizing it will probably introduce some distortion, but a little might be desirable. Not sure I want to give up the sophisticated volume control of the Placette though.
