They typically prefer components that are on the bright side of neutral.
You might be right if the Sony TA-A1ES is 'brighter' than the Yamaha amps. I have the Sony and it sounds quite nice to me but I wouldn't mind trying something like the Yamaha A-S2000 or the A-S2100 someday, but the 2100 is on the pricey side.
The Yamaha A-S801 seems like it would be an ideal amp for a 2-channel TV A/V setup with it's built in DAC, if it sounds good.
