The difference was largely in terms of bass impact and dynamics. You see a daughter power supply board was added that doubled the power supply energy. They also introduced a small fan.
I suspect the MKIII would sound different using a JFET/6H30 front end. While that is their current practice today (like my SP20 preamp), the earlier versions tended to be on the overly detailed side, IMHO.
