I wonder if it could have been a cold solder joint rather than the ground. When you say an interconnect is grounded at one end only, you are talking about the shield. It will still have two conductors -- one hot and the other ground -- both of which are connected at both ends. It is only the shield that is attached to the ground conductor at one end. I suspect you had another problem such as a cold solder joint if switching interconnects cured the problem.
