RE: Sound only out of one speaker..

1. That is a ground wire. Attach to ground post above phono jacks. It's there to reduce hum and noise.

2. You must engage in a process of elimination to locate the source of the problem. There are many possibilities:

-The turntable is only sending one channel (cartridge lead loose?)
-The receiver is only amplifying one channel
-One speaker is defective
-The wiring is not complete or shorted

I'd start by disconnecting and reconnecting all leads to make sure they are tight and properly connected.

Then move onto the source. Swap leads and see if same channel is out. If so, move on to next component. If problem moves to other speaker, then you've found the problem. Focus on cartridge leads.

Next, swap speaker leads from the receiver. If same channel is out, then the receiver is ok. If not, the problem is downstream and would most likely be speaker at that point.

Good luck!
