If you acquired the unit new in the box or after it had been out of service for a period of time, it will become more musical after about 50 to 150 hours. (I enjoyed one for a few years.)The panel control to alternate between gain settings in earlier production was controlled by the mode button, IIRC. As confirmed below, it now has a single function (display brightness/off).
The XP-20's separate housing of the power supply permitted substantial changes in the layout of the analogue signal processing that improved performance over the XP-10 (microdynamics, clarity, et al.). The character of the XP-20 is different, too.
I really enjoyed that product; if I could justify owning two Pass Labs preamplifiers, the XP-20 would be one of them.
