Good points. I too have heard quite different sound from various Krell offereings...some pretty good some not so good.
I was interesting once a friend brought over his Krell KSA250 to my place and we put it on the Apogees I had at the time. It had very powerful bass, sounded a bit dark and was not the last word in resolution. One thing we noticed though was that the bass, while deep and powerful, had no texture and created a big one note thud all the time. Terrible.
I have heard the KSA100 (the original) it was kind of warmish sounding with a rounded bass. Kind of tubey but not in the best sense.
I heard a pair of FPB 300 monos on a pair of Wilson Cub IIs and that made one hell of a nice soundstage but the overall tonal balance was dark and somewhat closed in. Again, very powerful bass underpinning the whole thing.
The one Krell piece I have been very impressed with was the original SACD standard cd player. That sounded simply good.
The one Krell piece I would really like to hear is the Krell KPS25 cd player because it is using Ultra Analog 20 bit DAC modules...probably the best DAC chipset of all time. I have them in my Kinergetics DAC and it really does redbook right.
