Yes I would recommend a good tubed preamp. The 84's or 7189's are some of the best "musical" sounding tubes. So stick with the 84's.
My amp is a Sherwood and uses 7189's, a type of EL84. My speakers are Zaph Audio SR-71's. All paper woofer and silk dome tweeter. A low distortion speaker that sounds very "musical". Compliments of the paper woofer.
As already recommended - try a better preamp. Then is you feel you're heading in the right direction try the SR71's.
