IMO the allocation of budget s/b 50 - 60% speakers with the remaining allotted to a integrated amp and either a DAC or CD player. If you begin with the best speakers you can afford, you're likely to be satisfied with your audio system for a longer period. Of course the amp must be capable of adequately driving the speakers you select. You should be able to improve the sound of this configuration by using the "system foundation" (room acoustics, synergistic cabling, resonance control) approach over time. And over time the DAC and CD player will be less expensive to replace than speakers.
