Sorry haven't listened seriously to speakers in your price range. Perhaps the best you can do is to start with a few of the Stereophile or TAS recommendations in your price range.

I would considering buying used speakers, but only if I had listened to that brand/model first and was confident I was dealing with a legitmate seller.

My final thought is I don't consider mp3 audio worthy except for the most casual listening and you don't need a good stereo system for that.
