Thanks. You're right, the 1600 has a bypass for the tone controls, but it made no difference. I can't fix it myself, although I do have a good tech that lives in my street. I think I would only fix the 1600 if the seller refunds me the cost of doing that.
It was advertised as "working very well and in great condition." Although the seller followed that with "sold as is". I think it's worth arguing about. Thanks for taking the time to workshop it with me. Sounds like the 1600 isn't worth hanging onto unless the seller will pay for fixing it.
