Ah, the trial is the point. I don't have an Integra 9.8 or 9.9 processor to experiment with. I was hoping for generalizations, the output of phono stages are commonly adequate or commonly not adequate to drive an amp without a preamp. As I understand it, in the pass-through mode, the Integra processing is out of the loop; I assume that includes amplification.

Except for phono, all other audio would be via HDMI, thus the question about phono stage.
