I like both the AES/Cary SixPacs and the Manley Neo-Classics a lot! They have a nice harmonic richness and midrange warmth with good resolution and transparency. The 250wpc Neo-Classic just has MORE of what I like in the EL34 based SixPacs. I really like the EL34 sound.
While the Neo-Classics drive my Tannoy D500 floorstanders AND Thiel CS2.4 speakers effortlessly, the SixPacs are not a good match for the Thiels. They run out of steam and sound a little compressed. Not so with the 250wpc Neo-Classics. They're a lot more powerful, sound bigger and more dyanmic, go deeper, and effortlessly drive the Thiels.
I don't have a photo of the most recent setup but imagine a bookshelf speaker (Tannoy S8LR) and a SixPac monoamp in each cubby hole to the left and right of the TV. This is my "low-power" TV / casual listening setup.
Now picture the big Neo-Classics on the floor, one on each side of the TV down low. These drive the Thiel CS2.4s when I'm in the mood for 'rock' or other serious listening.
The ARC preamp has balanced and RCA outputs so the SixPacs get signal via RCA interconnect while the Neo-Classics via XLR. I power up only the pair of power amps I want to listen to.![]()
