The biggest gain (pun intended) in using an active preamp, IMO, is it adds more "contrast" to the signal, by that I mean the amplitude of the signal. In other words, using a good active preamp can amplify the very lowest-level parts of the signal to the point where they are no longer of less voltage than the power amp's input sensitivity.
Put even simpler, a good active preamp can make sure the amp "hears" everything (well, almost everything).
