Some manufacturers did.
At one time Adcom made the SLS (straight line controller). It was essentially a 12k pot conventionally wired and a bank of switches to select sources.
You can find these on eBay for about $75-100. If your systems meets the gain & impedance requirements, it will sound fine. There is no need to spend lots of money in order to get good sound.
