The term "passive preamplifier" is an oxymoron, since if the box is passive, it can't be an amplifier. "Passive switchbox" might be more appropriate. Such a unit is necessarily a lossy device. Whether the loss will degrade the sound depends on a number factors, such as the source output impedance and output level; the input impedance of the device that follows (power amp, presumably); and the insertion loss of the passive device.
In some cases it would be adequate, and in other cases, not!
