With all due respect to the learned folks at Stereophile (and the above quote is probably out of context)...

Going from a low Z output on the source (perhaps 100-600Ohm)to a "passive" (perhaps a 10 k pot) is fine. With that impedance mismatch you are effectively transferring voltage. If there was no mismatch, then power (voltage and current) would be transferred (or attempted to get transferred). This would then be a problem, since the output section on the source is probably not designed to provide current. This would generate distortion.

I have no idea what the folks at Stereophile are talking about.
