...and my take is that anytime you can remove your equipment from the power grid, this will magnify itself in the purity of the signal transfer from preamp/power amp. This does have some drawbacks such as impedence matching with a resistive preamp but an autoformer preamp is much less susceptible to the rigorous matching that potentiometer based preamps present.Anytime one introduces the delicate mv preamp level signal to an active circuit/preamp, that circuit's noise floor/design integrity is going to contaminate the signal being amplified and no amount of signal processing can restore the damage.
My take is get off the power grid as much as possible and if you cannot, convert to balanced power or implement an AC regeneration PC in the very least and reap the benefits :-)
