thanks for the thoughts everyone. So why aren't pre-amps essentially passive circuits first with switchable circuits for matching Z, gain etc (all the active circuitry) that can be bypassed if not needed? I use my passive with Avantgarde Solos so it is a good match for me. I have a tube phono pre-amp so still have some nice valves to look at:-)
