The Adcom 5503 and 5400 we use in our theater room are very quiet, both mechanically and sonically.

It is not unusual for a television's line output to supply a healthy quantity of hum, hiss, and/or buzz. I am curious if your 5300's output noise improves if you disconnect the TV feed, or substitute a different source, such as a CD player that has an output level control.
