In some systems a passive will work well, and not so well in others.
Usually the criticism of a passive is that the system's dynamics are diminished.
The advantage would appear to be less active circuitry the music signal must pass through. And since active circuitry can't improve the signal, but only degrade it, a passive makes sense, at least on paper.
In my system I don't use a preamp since my CD player has a digital volume control and switches to increase gain to match it to an amp.
