Makes me wonder too why more people do not use passive pre-amps?
I have a rather nice sounding B&K pre-amp at home.
I saw a schematic for a DIY pre-amp on the DIY Audio Forum.
Out of curiosity, I decided to make it?
The parts ran me under $40....plus about two hours labor.
Some soldering skill is mandatory.
BTW: I used Kesler 245 63/37 solder....that made the job (to me) much easier than standard 60/40 electrical solder.
When I finished, I hooked everything up with short (2 foot) interconnects, to an old B&K ST-140 power amp.
The speakers were good-but-cheap Cambridge Sound Works Model 6 speakers ($90 - refurbished from CSW).
Absolute stunningly good sound coming from a pair of $90 speakers!!??
I built that little 6" x 3" x 2 1/4" passive pre-amp almost a month ago.
My jaw STILL hits the floor every time I play a CD.

Steve
